Garden Rooms Merton

Bespoke garden rooms for Merton’s Edwardian and interwar family homes. Garden Office Buildings has been transforming SW19 gardens for over twenty years.

Merton is a genuinely rewarding part of South West London, combining tree lined streets, generous gardens, and strong transport links into central London. From the handsome Edwardian semis along Dorset Road and the conservation area streets of Merton Park to the interwar family homes near Cannon Hill Common, this is an area where properties have the outdoor space to make a garden room a practical and valuable addition.

We are a family run company based in Biggin Hill, and we have been designing and building bespoke garden rooms across SW19 for over twenty years. Whether your home is a John Innes built villa on one of Merton Park’s tree lined avenues or a 1930s semi backing onto Morden Park, we will build something that fits your garden, your property, and your requirements exactly. No flat pack kits, no subcontractors you have not met.

Our showroom in Biggin Hill is well worth a visit. You can walk through finished buildings, feel the quality of the materials, and talk to the team who will actually be building your garden room. We handle everything from foundations to electrics, and every project is completed to the same high standard.

Garden Gym, Merton

A secondary school headteacher living in a four bedroom Edwardian semi on Mostyn Road in Merton Park wanted a dedicated home gym he could use before the school day. He had been paying for a membership at a Wimbledon gym but found he rarely went during term time. His south facing rear garden was around 18 metres deep with mature hedging on both sides, giving us plenty of room for a 5m x 3.5m build.

We fitted heavy duty rubber flooring throughout, a ceiling mounted pull up bar, and full height glazing along the front elevation to bring in morning light. The electrics include a 32 amp supply for a commercial treadmill, underfloor heating for winter sessions, and a wall mounted air conditioning unit. The exterior is finished in Siberian larch with a natural oil treatment that will weather gracefully alongside the established garden planting.

He told us the gym has completely changed his mornings. He is training five days a week before leaving for school, and his wife has started using the space for Pilates in the evenings. The building sits comfortably in the garden without encroaching on the lawn where their children play, which was a key concern from the start.

Garden Studio, Merton

A freelance textile designer working from her dining table in a Victorian terrace on Pelham Road needed a proper studio where she could spread out her fabrics, set up her industrial sewing machine, and host occasional workshops. The garden was a good size for a terraced property at around 14 metres deep, with side access through a passage from Kingston Road. We built a Multi at 6.5m x 4m, giving her a generous open plan workspace with a separate storage area partitioned at the rear.

We installed a Belfast sink with hot and cold water plumbed from the house, extra wide double doors for moving large rolls of fabric in and out, and adjustable LED track lighting so she can assess colours accurately. The walls were finished in plain white to serve as a neutral backdrop for her work. Two roof lights supplement the front glazing, ensuring even light throughout the day.

She moved into the studio within days of handover and has since hosted three weekend workshops for local makers, each with six to eight participants. She says the space has transformed her business and her creative output. Several neighbours along the street have asked for our details after seeing the finished building from their back gardens.

    About Merton

Merton sits in the heart of the London Borough of Merton, between Wimbledon to the north and Morden to the south. The area is best known for Merton Park, a conservation area of tree lined streets developed by John Innes between 1870 and 1904, featuring handsome detached and semi detached houses with generous private gardens. Beyond the conservation area, the housing stock includes Edwardian terraces along Kingston Road, interwar family homes near Cannon Hill Common, and more modern developments closer to South Wimbledon. Merton Abbey Mills, a former fabric printing works on the River Wandle, now operates as a craft and food market.

Green space is plentiful. Morden Park, Cannon Hill Common, and the Wandle Trail provide excellent outdoor recreation, while Wimbledon Common is a short walk or cycle to the north. Transport links are strong: South Wimbledon station on the Northern line connects residents to the City in under 30 minutes, Merton Park tram stop links to Croydon and Wimbledon, and buses serve the surrounding areas of Mitcham, Raynes Park, and Colliers Wood. Properties here tend to have good sized rear gardens, often 15 metres or more, making them well suited for garden room installations.

    Visit Our Showroom

From Merton, our Biggin Hill showroom is approximately 35 to 40 minutes by car, heading south east through Mitcham and Croydon or via the A232. It is a straightforward drive and well worth the trip to see our Midi, Maxi, and Multi models up close before making any decisions.

“We visited the showroom on a Saturday and were genuinely surprised by the quality. It is miles ahead of the flat pack options we had been looking at. The team explained everything clearly, gave us a fixed price, and the whole build was completed in under five weeks. Our garden studio is now the best room we own.” – Sarah and Tom, Merton Park SW19
