Garden Rooms Petts Wood

Petts Wood’s generous 1930s gardens and leafy character make it one of our favourite areas to work in, and our Biggin Hill showroom is just around the corner.

Petts Wood is a classic interwar suburb where tree-lined streets, well-kept gardens, and a strong sense of community come together beautifully. Designed by architect Leonard Culliford and developed by Basil Scruby in the late 1920s, the area has a planned, spacious feel that sets it apart from many other parts of London. For homeowners here, a bespoke garden building is a natural way to make the most of that generous outdoor space.

The houses in Petts Wood are predominantly 1930s detached and semi-detached homes with characterful Arts and Crafts details, bay windows, and generous rear gardens. Properties east of the railway line, along roads like Hazelmere Road, Tudor Way, and Woodland Way, tend to sit on larger plots with gardens of 80 feet or more. Even the more compact homes on the western side, closer to Queensway and the shops, typically have good-sized gardens that can comfortably accommodate a garden office, gym, or studio.

We’re a family company based in Biggin Hill, which is just a short drive from Petts Wood. We’ve been building garden rooms since 2004 and have completed projects throughout the area. Come and see our work at our showroom, or take a look at our buildings and prices to start thinking about what would work for your garden.

Every project we take on is fully bespoke. We visit your garden, talk through your requirements, and design a building that fits the space, the setting, and your lifestyle. From the foundations to the final coat of paint, our own team handles every step. Over 1,000 builds and counting, and we stand behind each one.

Garden Gym, Petts Wood

A paramedic living on Birchwood Road contacted us after years of struggling to maintain a gym routine around shift work. He needed somewhere to train at antisocial hours without driving to a commercial gym, and his 1930s semi-detached house had a 75-foot garden with a flat section near the rear fence that was perfect for a building.

We built a 5m x 3.8m insulated garden gym with heavy-duty rubber flooring over a reinforced base, designed to handle a full free weights setup including a squat rack and deadlift platform. We fitted a wall-mounted heater, opening skylight for ventilation during intense sessions, and acoustic insulation in the walls and ceiling so early morning sessions wouldn’t disturb the neighbours. The exterior was finished in dark grey composite cladding to complement the mature hedging along the boundary.

He told us it has completely changed his approach to fitness. He trains before or after every shift, and the fact that it’s just 30 seconds from his back door means there are no excuses. His partner has started using the space for yoga on her days off, and they’ve set up a small stretching area by the window that looks out over the garden towards the National Trust woodland beyond. Several neighbours from the same road have since been in touch about their own builds.

Garden Office, Petts Wood

A software developer on Greencourt Road had been working from the family dining table since his company went fully remote. With two school-age children doing homework in the evenings, the arrangement was causing friction, and he needed a quiet, dedicated workspace. His detached 1930s house had a well-maintained garden of around 90 feet, sloping gently towards a border of mature birch trees at the far end.

We installed a 6m x 3.5m Maxi on a levelled base towards the rear of the garden. Inside, we fitted a continuous desk along the back wall, Cat 6 cabling, underfloor heating, and a partitioned storage cupboard for files and equipment. The full-width glazed front faces back towards the house and catches good afternoon light. Outside, we laid a gravel path from the patio to the office entrance so he can walk down in any weather.

He said it’s the single best home improvement they’ve made. The separation between work and home life has made him more productive during the day and more present with the family in the evenings. His wife now uses the office on the two days a week she works from home as well. He mentioned that several people from his remote team have visited and all commented on the quality of the build, particularly the solid feel of the doors and the finish of the internal plastering.

    About Petts Wood

Petts Wood is a residential suburb in the London Borough of Bromley, sitting between Orpington to the south and Chislehurst to the north. The area was developed almost entirely in the late 1920s and 1930s, and that planned origin gives it a consistent, attractive character with wide streets, grass verges, and houses set back behind front gardens. The shopping parade along Queensway and Station Square serves daily needs with a mix of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants that give the area a village-like atmosphere despite its proximity to central London.

Petts Wood station provides regular Southeastern services to London Victoria, London Bridge, Charing Cross, and Cannon Street, with journey times as short as 25 minutes. This makes it a popular choice for commuters who want suburban space without a long journey into town. The 88 acres of National Trust woodland at Petts Wood and Hawkwood offer beautiful walking trails through ancient bluebell woods and open heathland, while Jubilee Country Park provides further green space to the north-west. Willett Recreation Ground, with its cricket pitch, bowling greens, and tennis courts, adds to the outdoor appeal.

The housing is predominantly 1930s, with detached and semi-detached homes featuring Arts and Crafts influences, tile-hung gables, and bay windows. Properties east of the railway are generally larger with more extensive gardens, while those to the west are slightly more compact but still generously proportioned by London standards. Neighbouring areas include Orpington, Bromley, Chislehurst, and St Mary Cray, all accessible within minutes by car or bus.

“We live on the east side of Petts Wood and had been thinking about a garden office for over a year. We visited the Biggin Hill showroom on a Saturday morning and were really impressed by the construction quality. No hard sell at all, just a genuine conversation about what we needed. The office was built five weeks later and it’s been absolutely perfect. We only wish we’d done it sooner.” – Andrew and Kate, BR5
