Garden Gym, Sevenoaks

A hedge fund manager living in a five-bedroom detached home near Knole Park wanted a high-spec private gym where he could train seriously without the drive to the nearest health club. The property sat on a generous half-acre plot with a south-facing rear garden bordered by mature beech trees. We designed a 5.5m x 4m garden gym positioned to take advantage of the views across the garden towards the parkland beyond.

The specification was a step above the standard. We installed a reinforced concrete raft foundation to support a power rack and Olympic lifting platform, along with acoustic insulation to contain the noise from dropped weights. The front elevation was fully glazed with slim-profile aluminium frames, and we added a high-level window on the rear wall to create cross-ventilation. A concealed air conditioning unit and underfloor heating keep the environment right whatever the weather.

He’s told us the gym has completely replaced his old health club membership and saved him a good five hours a week in travel time. On clear mornings, he can see the deer from Knole Park grazing at the edge of the treeline while he trains, which is a fairly unusual gym view by any standard.

Garden Studio, Sevenoaks

A children’s book illustrator working from a cramped attic room in a Victorian townhouse near Sevenoaks High Street needed a dedicated studio with better light and more space for her drawing table and reference library. We recommended our Multi model, which gave her two rooms: a main studio flooded with natural light from full-height glazing, and a smaller rear room for storage, printing and framing.

The garden was about 80 feet long and relatively narrow, typical of the Victorian properties in central Sevenoaks. We positioned the studio towards the rear boundary and used larch cladding on the exterior to give it a warm, natural appearance that sits well with the established planting. Inside, the main studio was painted in a warm white with oak flooring, and we installed a north-facing roof light to provide the consistent, even illumination that’s so important for detailed artwork.

She moved in the week after completion and told us it’s transformed her working life. The separation from the family home means she can focus properly during the day, and the extra space has allowed her to take on larger commissions. She’s even started running weekend illustration workshops from the studio, which she never could have done from the attic.

    About Sevenoaks

    Sevenoaks is a prosperous market town in west Kent, set among the rolling hills of the North Downs and the Kentish Weald. It’s best known for Knole, a vast National Trust estate and deer park that borders the town centre, but the area has much more to offer. The High Street is excellent, with a strong mix of independent shops, restaurants and cafes alongside everyday essentials. The town also has a thriving community feel, with regular farmers’ markets and cultural events throughout the year.

    Property in Sevenoaks ranges from period townhouses near the centre to large country homes on the outskirts towards Riverhill, Seal and Ide Hill. Gardens are often substantial, particularly on the south side of town where properties can sit on plots of an acre or more. Sevenoaks station provides a fast commute to London, with direct services to London Bridge in around 30 minutes, making it one of Kent’s most popular commuter towns.
