Garden Gym, Lewisham

A paramedic based at Lewisham Hospital wanted a reliable home gym to maintain his fitness between demanding shifts. He lived in a three-bedroom Victorian mid-terrace on Algernon Road with a 13-metre rear garden and decent side access through a gate off the shared path. We designed a 4m x 3m garden gym tucked against the back fence, positioned to leave the rest of the garden free for his two young children.

Inside, we fitted 20mm rubber matting, a wall-mounted folding bench and squat rack, a set of Olympic bumper plates, an air bike, and a pegboard system for resistance bands and skipping ropes. The client trains in intense 30-minute sessions, so ventilation was important. We installed two opening windows with mesh screens and a quiet extraction fan to keep the space comfortable during high-output workouts.

He told us the gym has been invaluable for maintaining his fitness around an unpredictable shift pattern. Training at any hour, without having to drive to a commercial gym, has made consistency far easier. His partner has started using the space for home workout videos, and they both agree it was one of the best things they have done to the property.

Garden Office, Lewisham

A software engineer who commuted daily to Canary Wharf on the DLR negotiated a permanent remote working arrangement and needed a proper home office. Her Edwardian semi on Lewisham Park had a generous garden of about 18 metres, with mature fruit trees and a south-facing aspect. We installed a Maxi at 5.5m x 3.5m, set behind the established planting to create a sense of separation from the main house.

The office features a large desk for dual-monitor working, a standing desk on the opposite wall for variation during long coding sessions, and a comfortable reading chair for documentation review. We hardwired ethernet from the house via a buried cable trench and installed underfloor heating for year-round comfort. The full-width bi-fold doors open onto a small decked terrace we laid as part of the project, giving her the option to work partially outdoors in warm weather.

She has been working full time from the garden office for ten months and says it has transformed her work-life balance. The four-second commute across the garden has replaced an hour-long round trip on the DLR, and her employer is so pleased with her productivity that they have offered to contribute towards the cost. Lewisham is the principal town of the London Borough of Lewisham, located about six miles south-east of Charing Cross. The area is centred around the busy high street and Lewisham Shopping Centre, with a large open-air market and an increasingly diverse food and drink scene.
