Garden Rooms Sussex

Garden Office Buildings extends its trusted, hands-on service into Sussex, bringing the same quality craftsmanship that Kent and Surrey homeowners have relied on since 2004.

Sussex is a county of extraordinary variety, from the rolling chalk ridges of the South Downs to the ancient heathland of Ashdown Forest and the bustling coastal cities of Brighton and Eastbourne. At Garden Office Buildings, we’re proud to serve homeowners across both East and West Sussex, bringing the same bespoke design and build quality that has earned us over 1,000 satisfied customers since 2004.

We work across the county, from the northern towns of East Grinstead, Crawley, and Horsham that sit close to the Surrey and Kent borders, through the Mid Sussex heartland of Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, and Cuckfield, to Lewes, the historic county town of East Sussex. We also cover the areas around Uckfield, Crowborough, and the villages of the High Weald, as well as reaching into Brighton and Hove and the coastal stretches. Whether you’re in a period cottage overlooking the Downs or a modern family home on a new development, we’ll design a garden room that works for your space.

Sussex gardens come in all shapes and sizes, and we’ve built in the full range. Large rural plots in the Weald and around Ashdown Forest offer wonderful settings for generous garden offices and studios, while the Victorian terraces of Brighton and Lewes present their own design challenges that we relish solving. Suburban family homes in Crawley, Horsham, and Haywards Heath typically have good-sized rectangular gardens that are ideal for a well-proportioned build. See our buildings and prices for the full range, or come to our showroom in Biggin Hill to see the quality for yourself.

Every Sussex build is fully bespoke, designed around your garden from the ground up. We manage the entire process, from the initial site visit through groundworks, construction, electrics, and final handover. Our own team does all the work, and we don’t disappear once the building is finished. We’ve been doing this for over twenty years, and our reputation matters to us.

Garden Gym, East Grinstead

A physiotherapist living on the outskirts of East Grinstead, near the edge of Ashdown Forest, wanted to build a gym and treatment space in her garden so she could see private clients from home. Her detached Edwardian house sat on a large plot with a 100-foot garden that backed onto open heathland, and she needed a building that would serve both as a personal training space and a professional clinic.

We built a 6.5m x 4.5m insulated garden gym with a divided interior. The larger section has commercial-grade rubber flooring, a treatment bench, resistance equipment, and floor-to-ceiling glazing overlooking the garden and the forest beyond. The smaller section is fitted out as a reception and waiting area with a compact kitchenette, seating, and a separate entrance. We installed underfloor heating, a wall-mounted air conditioning unit, and full electrics including dedicated circuits for an ultrasound machine and electrotherapy equipment.

She told us the building has allowed her to launch the private practice she’d been planning for years. She sees clients four days a week and trains herself in the space on her days off. The setting among the trees and the views across the heathland create a calming environment that her clients love, and she said the professional finish of the interior gives the practice instant credibility. Several clients have asked who built the space, and she’s referred us to a colleague in Haywards Heath who is now planning a similar project.

Garden Office, Horsham

An architect in Horsham had been renting desk space in a shared office on the Bishopric but wanted to cut overheads and spend more time near his young family. His 1930s detached house on a quiet road near Horsham Park had a wide, flat garden of around 80 feet, bordered by mature trees and a low brick wall along the rear boundary.

We installed a 6m x 4m Maxi towards the rear of the garden, oriented to capture north light through the full-width glazing, which is ideal for design work. Inside, we fitted a large continuous desk along one wall for drawings and model-making, plan drawers built into a storage unit, Cat 6 network cabling, and underfloor heating. A small partitioned area at one end serves as a meeting space where clients can sit comfortably while reviewing plans. The exterior is finished in charcoal-stained timber cladding that complements the mature garden planting.

He said the office has transformed both his practice and his family life. He no longer loses an hour a day to commuting, and being at home means he can do the school run and still be at his desk by nine. Clients have been impressed by the studio setting, and he’s found that the quiet, controlled environment has genuinely improved the quality of his work. He told us the build quality exceeded his expectations, which as an architect he said was a genuine compliment, and that the whole process from site visit to handover was handled with real professionalism.

    About Sussex

Sussex is a historic county on the south coast of England, divided administratively into East Sussex and West Sussex. It stretches from the Hampshire border in the west to the Kent border in the east, with the English Channel forming its southern boundary. The South Downs National Park runs across the full width of the county, a landscape of chalk ridges, dry valleys, and sweeping views that was designated as England’s newest national park in 2010. In the north, the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty takes in Ashdown Forest, ancient woodland, and rolling sandstone hills that inspired the setting of Winnie the Pooh.

The county’s towns are wonderfully varied. East Grinstead sits at the northern tip of the High Weald, a historic market town with medieval buildings and excellent rail connections. Crawley, originally a new town built in the 1950s, has grown into West Sussex’s largest urban centre, close to Gatwick Airport. Horsham is a handsome market town with a thriving independent shopping scene. Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill are busy Mid Sussex commuter towns with direct trains to London and Brighton. Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, is a characterful hillside town overlooking the Ouse valley, while Brighton and Hove bring cosmopolitan energy to the coast. Further east, Uckfield and Crowborough serve as gateways to Ashdown Forest.

Transport connections across Sussex are strong. Fast trains from East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, and Horsham reach London Bridge and Victoria in under an hour, while the Brighton Main Line carries frequent services into London in as little as 50 minutes. The M23, A23, A24, and A22 provide the main road routes north towards London and the M25. Properties across the county range from medieval timber-framed cottages and Georgian townhouses to Victorian terraces and modern family homes, with gardens that vary from compact urban plots to expansive rural grounds. A bespoke garden room offers Sussex homeowners a high-quality, planning-friendly way to add space for work, fitness, creativity, or independent living.

“We’re in East Grinstead and assumed we’d have to use a local Sussex company, but a friend in Bromley recommended Garden Office Buildings. We drove to Biggin Hill and were blown away by the showroom. The quality is in a different league. Our garden office was built six weeks later and it’s been absolutely perfect. Worth every mile of the drive to see them first.” – Nick and Emma, East Grinstead
